Rooms and Buildings

Alchemy Awareness Lab: An introductory assembly to alchemy located inside Grossatete Sanatorium in Severance, Hoopenfangia. Authorized Apothecary: A pharmacy that dispenses prison-grade medicinal herbs and potions to the inmates at Grossatete Sanatorium. Basement: The basement travels like a maze under the sanatorium. It is used mostly for storage, including old files on former inmates. Broom Garage: A room used to store the inmate’s prison-grade brooms while not practicing their liftings on Boot-Scoot Landing. Chanting Chamber: A room utilized for inmates to chant away their negativities and practice their prison-grade spells while under security watch. Den of Disciplines: A room where the sanatorium head magister holds inmates in order to discipline them. It is full of shackles and torturous looking devices. Dining Cell: A large dining hall where discarded food from Mystic Steeples is dropped down to the inmates (from a shaft in the ceiling) onto a feeding trough or “rain gutter,” as Doomsy Gloomsy calls it. Enchanted Weapon’s Room: According to Doomsy Gloomsy, this room full of suits of armor was and probably still is a torture chamber. It has an old uniform closet. Fourteen Floors of Reflection: The path of stairs leading to the west tower behind the Sanctuary of Manifestations. Sanatorium officials pretend this area has been closed for years, but it secretly houses the Scrying Essentials Assembly under Theurgist Hyland Pierce, who is secretly performing Essence Excursions on the inmates. The only other way to the top floor of the tower is by using the Pippa Phantasma’s Passion Propulsor, a pump-action elevator that you have to jump up and down on to move. Still, this is faster way is only for Mystic Ministry and sanatorium workers to access the tower. Garden of Herbal Delights: A large garden directly behind Grossatete Sanatorium. It contains every known herb and plant that Roma Phunga and her Wortcunning apprentices receive from the garden workers at the sanatorium. The garden also contains the largest grove of poison apple trees that are steadily taking over the garden, choking out the precious herbs and vegetation. Garden Shed: A shed for storing garden tools and supplies behind the Garden of Herbal Delights. Grossatete Grove: a wooded sanctuary within the gated Sanatorium, loaded with all manner of undomesticated beasts. Grossatete Maximum Security: Only the most dangerous and violent inmates are confined to this pink padded prison, which is located behind GrossateteSanatorium. Hall of Cells: A long hallway of private dwelling cells geared more for families and inmates of a less threatening reputation or record.
Hall of Disciplines: A hall that leads to the Den of Disciplines. The rooms and cells along this hall are of a more disciplinary, rehabilitative nature for the inmates to prepare in hopes of being released from the sanatorium. Hall of Elementary Sciences: A hall of assemblies of a basic or prison-safe nature.
Head Magister’s Office: Tilta Crumpecker’s office in book one of the CANDLEWICKE 13 series, Curse of the McRavens.
Leery Library: The sanatorium library where inmates can check out books. Many of the books are leery of the inmates and react when they so much as touch the books’ spines.
Limited Lounge: A lounge where inmates gather for a limited time when not on work duty or in basic assemblies. Ministry Pantry: A food pantry where Mystic Ministry and select sanatorium staff get good meals while the sanatorium inmates have to eat grub from the feeding trough in the Dining Cell.
Sanctuary of Manifestations: Located in Grossatete Sanatorium. This room is mostly used by Mystic Ministry to test inmates to see what types of magic are manifesting in their lives. The ministry also tries to get the Ancients to manifest in this room.
Scrying Essentials Assembly: This assembly is just a ruse; it’s really Essence Excursions, a compulsory rehabilitation assembly at Grossatete Sanatorium, under the title and guise of Scrying Essentials. The assumed goal of the sanatorium headmistress and possibly Mystic Ministry is to remove rebellious witches’ inner essences and turn them into obedient zombies. The assembly is located in a protected location at the top of the western tower past the Sanctuary of Manifestations, where Valor McRaven assumed nobody had been in years.
Solitary Confinement: *See Ogre Skull Hill.
Boot-scoot Landing: A broom-landing airstrip with the lovely view of Ogre Skull Hill behind it.
Misfortune Avenue: A road leading to and from the sanatorium to the outside of Severance, Hoopenfangia.
Ogre Skull Hill: A place of solitary confinement for temporary punishments. Peer through the eye socket of a giant skull, jutting from this hill of half-buried ogre skulls a half-mile behind Boot Scoot Landing at Grossatete Sanatorium, and you might find a witch hunched up in a straighttjacket in complete misery.
Sanatorium Square: An outdoor public square where inmates gather for occasions.
Sanatorium Stadium: The stadium where the Spurgmulin Tournaments are held when not at the other two larger domes.
Subju Gate: The entry gates to Grossatete Sanatorium in Severance, Hoopenfangia.

Architectural Parts Unique to the Sanitorium

Eye of Security: These are eyeballs that once belonged to cyclopes: giant humanoids with one eye. The eyes are enchanted and used as security cameras to spy on inmates throughout the sanatorium. Looking Glass of Corrections: Security mirrors in Grossatete Sanatorium. Wall of Clocks: A wall of atomic clocks in the Sanctuary of Manifestations. No one knows what the clocks are used for exactly, except as some type of rehabilitation experiment on inmates in conjunction with the Spherical Portal of Reformation in the same room in Grossatete Sanatorium.

Sanitorium Spurgmulin Crew

*For Spurgmulin Tournament players, rules, and in-depth details click here. Grossatete Gang: the Sanatorium marching band. Grossettes: Grossatete Sanatorium’s cheercasters. They have black-lacquered fingernails, black lipstick, and wear black leather uniforms. Official Mascot: A blindfolded ogre named Grog that is led around on a leash by a grown man dressed as a little girl. Grog is a costume worn by two people, one on the shoulders of the other. Grog the ogre is representative of the reforming power that Grossatete Sanatorium has on its inmates. To demonstrate this, the mascot slops around the stadium in a downtrodden manner during the tournaments. Sanatorium Security Crew: Inmates at Grossatete Sanatorium are only allowed to attend the tournament when the games are hosted at the sanatorium unless they are players or assistants, then they are heavily monitored by security. The soothsayers lock the more dangerous prisoners in chains and leather straps as soon as they seat them. Sanatorium Stadium: Grossatete Sanatorium is home of Sanatorium Stadium, the fourth largest sporting arena in the country. It is not enclosed, so the weather can play a factor in when Mystic Ministry schedules a tournament there. For games at the sanatorium, the stargazers check the constellations with their telescopes and give magic staff signals to O Enchantedness when it is safe to proceed with the tournament.
